Top Breeders 1998, 1999 & 2000
Crufts Best of Breed 1997, 1998 & 1999

Mangwe Rhodesian Ridgebacks have been established since 1980. By John & Joanne Baldwin. During this time we have bred 10 UK champions and numerous CC winners.

We have had the good fortune to be Top Breeders for Rhodesian Ridgebacks in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and hope to continue this trend in the future.

We have exported to many countries all over the world. Many of these have achieved championship status.

Both of us are breed judges being eligible to award Challenge Certificates and judge under F.C.I. regulations. John also handles dogs in shows throughout the world.

Puppies will be available to the deserving during 2004.

About The Rhodesian Ridgeback

A handsome upstanding dog, strong and active, capable of hunting all day. Understanding, loyal hound that is self assured and will show unconditional love and devotion to his master. But will be aloof with strangers.

Owning a ridgeback is something else. They are very clever; they will be your friend and equal but not your slave. They are stubborn and can think for themselves with an independent spirit. Never underestimate and always respect. Ridgebacks do not require a great deal of exercise about one hour a day, but love any exercise and will be ready as soon as you jangle the lead. Snoozing in a sunny spot is most ridgebacks idea of heaven.

People often wrongly accuse ridgebacks as being difficult to train. You cannot force them; you need to work as a team, learning together. Food usually does the trick. They can be very greedy and extremely good thieves. No work surface or fridge door is unreachable if there is a tasty treat just begging to be eaten. Socialization and basic obedience is essential this large hound can easily pull an adult over or knock you off your feet. Being a hound they love to chase anything and everything. Cars, joggers are all fair game to an untrained ridgeback; you need to be in control.

Around the house a ridgeback will usually accept any visitor that you make welcome. But beware the unwelcome visitor. Well-trained children and ridgebacks can mix very well; mutual respect is a must, and supervision from an adult around young children. Your dog cannot tell you when he has had enough. Never leave children and dogs any dogs alone together. You never know what the children are up to.

Ridgebacks love companionship and will usually stay close to you, their head on your foot while you rest or laying in the garden watching you weed. They love nothing more than to sneak off into your bedroom and have 40 winks on your bed. Even more fun when they know that the bedroom is off limits.

Here are a few things that people who have purchased a ridgebacks off us over the years have written to us:

"From the moment he arrived home Baz has been an absolute delight. House trained in 4 days. He’s become a celebrity with the local primary school children, with his ability to drool at will, when they pass with sweets and ice cream. He waits by the gate at 3.30pm. Baz has taken a lot of time, effort and money but when you know that he is prepared to stand and die for you, you cannot put a price on that. It is strange the effect a dog can have on your life" Mr & Mrs Parkinson.

"Thank you for such a wonderful dog who is giving us so much happiness. Brad is the most gentle and special dog we could ever wish for.
Every day he makes us smile he is almost human in his perception and mannerisms"
Mr & Mrs Cook.

"Never have we bought anything, which gave us so much pleasure.
He is warm, fun loving and a loyal friend"
Mr & Mrs Farleigh.

"Hobbes is friendly happy and marvellous with Thomas our son.
He has exceeded our expectations, he is admired and adored by all our family and friends and a great talking point. when out on our walks"
Mr & Mrs Sharpe.

"Africa is a precious part of our family. My son loves him so much and he loves him. He plays so cute with him, he’s such a soppy dog he just wants to cuddle and lick everyone. He is especially protective of me; he follows me from room to room.
He is a big soft baby and we love him very much"
Mrs Turnell.
